Management Accountant at Makers Academy

Everyone deserves a job they love. Makers Academy re-trains people as software developers, then helps them find that job.

You deserve a job you love. We’ve got one for you.

At Makers Academy, we're going from a start-up to a scale-up. We're proud of what we’ve achieved in the first 4 years of our journey, but to support us in doubling revenues this year, and then surpassing that, we're creating a new full-time position.

The team will trust you to make sure that day-to-day finance processes run like clockwork, from managing accounts payable and accounts receivable, through expenses, payroll and the preparation of VAT returns, bank reconciliations and P&L, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow reconciliations for review by the Finance Director. You’ll also be interacting with people across the whole business, for example by providing the sales teams with ad-hoc support, developing your commercial skills.

You will report to the Finance Director, who recently joined the business with a background in a Big 4 firm, TMT corporates, and a technology startup. Makers Academy is now at a point where it requires a full-time management accountant/finance analyst to help embed operational excellence into the finance function and to deliver more value to the business. The FD has ambitious plans for the function and as the second hire into the team, you will play an important role in shaping it.

You will definitely:

  • Have 2-4+ years of experience as a bookkeeper, finance analyst or management accountant
  • Have worked for an outsourced accounting provider, or in-house for an SME
  • Be able to demonstrate that you meet the above requirements
  • Have experience taking accounts to Trial Balance stage and preparing BS & P&L reconciliations
  • Have great attention to detail
  • Be extremely proactive
  • Be comfortable operating in ambiguity, in a rapidly growing business

You will probably:

  • Be AAT (or equivalent) qualified, or working towards an accounting qualification (ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent)
  • Have worked with Xero and/or Sage 50 payroll

You will have the opportunity to work across the business and broaden your skillset, as initially the accounting elements of the role are likely to be occupy around 75% of your time. In our self-managed culture, that means you have the freedom to choose how you deliver value and develop your career with us.

You'll also be:

  • growing as a person, by learning radical transparency, vulnerability, the growth mindset, emotional intelligence, 'non-violent communication', hard truths about yourself, and how to give and receive feedback honestly and productively;
  • welcome to do yoga twice a week and guided meditation every day;
  • playing all sorts of board games, card games, video games, table tennis and Nerf wars;
  • working in the hammock, on the bean bags or sofa if you wish
  • surrounded by a diverse group of incredibly smart, motivated people, who all really care about doing the very best they can for our students, for our hiring partners and for each other.

We’re the best at what we do, according to our clients (both students and employers), our competitors (they all admit it), industry bodies, the press and the government. We can only get better by working with you.

Everyone should have a job they love. Including you!
